Now I head back to the US. I’ve been the air for several hours and I’m again marveling how I can wake up on one country and go to sleep on another. I’ve had this feeling before, but I can’t quite capture the sentiment. Maybe it’s a sense of loss, that I have left a piece of myself behind. I have too, time, new friends, old friends, different ways of doing things. There is a sense of growth, of seeing the good things a society has to offer, trains, construction & design techniques, food, beauty. This was a reminder that I miss being able to walk down the stairs and to the corner of the block and being able to buy fresh bread like I could in Macau. Someday…. Last Thursday feels like a very long time ago. Major events really give one a sense of time. When I’m in the states, a week goes by quite quickly and last Sunday doesn’t feel like such a long time ago. But Last Monday I was in Switzerland, and with a land mark like that how can one get lost in ordinary.
I like to walk. One of my favorite things to do is wander through a city either on foot or a really old bicycle that’s worth about $2. Germany’s a pretty good place to do that. Today I walked around Karlsruhe, then hiked up to the hill above Durlach. There’s actually both a staircase and a train that go to the top, but taking a train up a hill is cheating and I didn’t find the staircase until the way down it’s rather hard to spot really. Every Friday evening Tomashof has a service for the youth called Praystation. I took a bus up and accidentally got off one stop to early, so rather than wait for the next bus I decided to hoof it since I figured I was less than a mile away. In actuality, I was probably closer to 2 miles away and as I arrived at Tomashof, the next bus went by. So on the bright side I stayed warm, got some exercise and something to talk about.
